Allison McKearn is a hit at O'Neill
James I. O'Neill’s Allison McKearn is averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game.
Like so many other rumors, this one quickly took on a life of its own, spreading all over Section 9.
The word around the courts earlier this season was that James I. O'Neill had a pretty good new player in its lineup. She clogged up the middle, scoring, rebounding and blocking shots.
Not bad for a German exchange student.
As it turns out, the rumor was partly true. Yes, James I. O'Neill's Allison McKearn can play, but she's more American than Deutschland.
McKearn spent the last three years living in Wurzburg, Germany, where her father, Col. Mark McKearn, was stationed with the U.S. Army. The family transferred to West Point this summer.
"I think it's kind of funny," McKearn said. "I think it actually started earlier this season when we played Sullivan West. Their coach (Ron Bernhardt) asked me where I was from and I said Germany. I didn't think anything of it, but after the game some of their fans were asking where in Germany I was from."
McKearn, 17, has lived in Germany on three different occasions. She was born in Germany, but also spent time growing up in California, Kansas, Rhode Island and Texas. McKearn played basketball at an English-speaking high school in Germany. The team often traveled as far as Italy for games.
O'Neill coach Kevin Schoepfer learned of McKearn last spring when her father notified him of her impending arrival by e-mail. He even provided a scouting report: She's a good, hard-working player and probably can contribute.
McKearn is averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds this season and has given O'Neill a legit presence inside.
"I thought she was very good when we played," said John S. Burke Catholic center Emily Stallings, a 2007 Sunday Record first-team all-star. "She has good post moves and was hard to guard. I was actually surprised to see (O'Neill) have such a good player."
Just about every opposing coach has asked Schoepfer about the German exchange student, er, McKearn this season. He has some fun with it and might even start another rumor about her.
"Just to have some fun, I tell them she's a sophomore or in eighth grade," he said. "Their jaw drops, but then I usually tell them the truth."
